Hi all,
Randolph
After the marathon day yesterday, it was to be a slower paced day around San Antonio today. In the planning stages for this trip, whenever I checked the activity at Randolph (via ADSB Exchange), there seemed to be lots of activity at this busy training base every single working day. With that in mind I had allocated the entire morning to sit here and take in all the action….
We had good luck throughout all of the trip but we were to experience our first disappointment on this morning. We woke up to a fairly thick fog and although the forecast was that it would shift quickly, it hung around all morning and meant that a few of us got a few hours extra kip in the vehicle. It started to clear around midday and so we stayed a bit longer in hope of seeing at least a few things and so it was to be. Unfortunately we had other targets ahead that just wouldn’t wait………

A nice little museum and a reasonable amount of general aviation to be seen. Stinson Municipal Airport is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States (after College Park Airport located in Maryland).

The mission here was to se as many of the stored MAX and 777s around this huge Boeing facility, as we could. This was fairly easily achieved with a bit of patience and going around as much of the perimeter as possible. No one-stop place here to achieve the following log! It was an added bonus to see so many C-17s on maintenance with Boeing and also the C-5s and F-16s on the USAF active side of this base. Can’t remember ever seeing a C-5 Galaxy circuit bashing before!

As I understand it, it is still not possible for non-nationals to get on USAF bases without prior permission unless accompanied by a US citizen that will sponsor you. In light of this, we did not try to get on base to see the amazing parade ground collection, as we were aware that most of it could be seen by walking the fence-line and so it proved. I understand that the VC-47 might be msn unknown and not 16255/33003?

We were running out of daylight by now, but I was keen to catch up with the Air Cote d Ivoire A319 that had passed through the UK in Covid times, when we were not supposed to be making unnecessary journeys. You are able to read off almost everything here from the public side of the fence, except for some of the items in the biz-jet scrapping area. Unusually, everything here was either a frame or a scrape for me.

Hi Grant,
Re: Lackland – Quote “As I understand it, it is still not possible for non-nationals to get on USAF bases without prior permission unless accompanied by a US citizen that will sponsor you. In light of this, we did not try to get on base to see the amazing parade ground collection, as we were aware that most of it could be seen by walking the fence-line and so it proved.”
In November 1979, myself and two friends were fortunate enough to have the opportunity of viewing these aircraft from the ‘other side’; we met up with a guy on base who we got to know when he had be stationed here at Lakenheath (been on there as well), so we had a sponsor to vouch for us. Without trying to spoil the excellent job you have done collecting all these stats and photos, the aircraft in the open-air museum look a whole lot better from the other side and close up; don’t ask me for the photos I took at the time as I was shooting transparencies which somehow got wet in storage and ruined almost every one! :o(
