Hi all,
The following report was put together courtesy of information provided by Moscow based Gavin Maxwell. This show amazingly still went ahead despite COVID, and although I did the right thing in cancelling my planned trip there, I will go again next year if anyone fancies joining me to do this and everything aviation that Moscow has to offer (COVID allowing).
Report by Gavin Maxwell
Army 2020 expo was held this year between 23rd to 29th August at Kubinka near Moscow. Army 2020 is the sixth time this exhibition has been held and is a world beating show of military strength by the Russian Government attracting thousands of participants from 120 countries.
It is held in three distinct areas – 1) Patriot Park is for ground equipment and is near Kubinka town – 2) the air component is held at Kubinka air base 55km west of Moscow – 2) Alabino training ground where tactical warfare is practised with competitions between tanks and marine exercises being held. Live fire is used!
The last three days are available to the public and the air base is free of charge.
A total of around 170 aircraft was seen at the airbase which also has a small museum of six fighter aircraft. Stars of the show were the new Sukhoi Su-35S which flew a spectacular display, probably the best I have seen including Cobra, backward flips and somersaults, followed by the Strizhi (Swallows) in nine MiG-29 types and the Russki Vityazi (Russian Knights) with four Su30SM’s and two Su-35S’s.
The most unusual sight of the day was the arrival of a Qatar Emiri Air Force C17A registration MAE. It arrived smack bang in the middle of a aerobatic flying display of Yak-52’s…quite a bizarre sight to see….but that’s Russia for you! Seen at Kubinka on the 28th August 2020…….
