I managed to get away over the Christmas period as my wife had to work and based myself at Hooters in Las Vegas.

I’d done a California/Arizona storage fields tour last March but didn’t get to Kingman as it was too far from Phoenix to drive, so the opportunity was too good to miss.

The City of Kingman took over the running of the airport as of May this year which resulted in a change of personnel. Robert Riley has moved on and has been replaced by Steve Johnston as airport manager. I spent a little time chatting to Steve after my tour and he’s a very friendly chap, he’s a pilot and enjoys visiting museums. My tour was with Paul, one of the fire crew, who knew much of the history of the airport. I must have been lucky as he took me across the runway to the CRJs to the east. I shall note those for you at the end of the log.

I’d like to think I logged everything there but I’ve a feeling I may have missed one row. A few words of advice – do your logging with a tape recorder. Keith Marney warned me that there wasn’t enough time to write everything down, so using my tape recorder was successful. I even managed to get some photos which will appear on Flickr in the months to come. Photography was done with Paul’s permission but with caution as the operator there isn’t keen.

It wasn’t possible to get too close to the scrapping area due to debris and possible tyre damage, so a drive round the perimeter track was in order. More advice for you, don’t take the first and most obvious road which starts at 35.256472, -113.967800, take the next one about a hundred yards further on. There is a large block of concrete in the way on the first road after about 200 yards and you’d need one of those 4x4s with very high ground clearance to get over it. I’d also highly recommend a rental car with 4 wheel drive as some parts of the second road are loose deep sand. I had one and only just got through!
