Hi all,
In between the the morning and evening hot air balloon launches at Ragley Hall/Alcester (Midlands Air Festival), two men and two dogs set off to investigate airfields along the M40 corridor.
First up was Finmere.
Quite early here so only one hangar open. It was requested on behalf of the owner here, that no log or pictures (of aircraft in hangars) be published. A fair ask in return for not being told to clear off! Please respect this if any of you travel there in future.
Turweston next.
I know that Air-Britain’s 41st Annual Fly-In is be held over 19th/20th June and I’ll probably be back, but I guess that’ll be heaving with people and so it was nice to walk around and get photographs without peeps in them. Dogs on leads allowed to roam here too – a common response from all the airfields visited today!

A complete failure here. Could see the strip and two buildings where the residents are probably housed but couldn’t see how to get to them. Access looked like going through a farm yard but with closed gates, that was a no-no! This is why I generally don’t bother with farm strips 🙂

I haven’t been here for some time and there are now keypad controlled gates stopping you from driving onto the airfield. As the gliders were launching from the far side of the field and there was no one around in the club house to let us through the gate, we made do with what was around the gliding hangar area and those that we saw launched and flying.

The tower door was locked due to COVID protocol and nobody answered the phone call that you are advised to make instead. I instead spoke with some of the fire crew guys that were sitting around at the base of the tower building and they arranged for us to have walking access, again with Jet & Ringo on leads. To my surprise (being a Saturday), Heliair was open and so some bonus helicopters were had. The star machine here was the long term restoration project that has found its wings again – the Russian Spitfire. It may have displayed at the Midlands Air Festival?
